Washington CNN —The European Commission sent a warning letter Friday to Google and its subsidiary YouTube over disinformation and graphic content linked to the Hamas-Israel conflict, in the European Union’s latest effort to scrutinize Big Tech’s handling of the war. The letter from European Commissioner Thierry Breton, addressed to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and also sent to YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, reminded the company about its content moderation obligations under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA). Breton shared the letter on X.Breton highlighted legal requirements for Google to keep graphic content such as hostage videos away from underage users; to act swiftly when authorities flag content that violates European laws; and to mitigate disinformation. It also warned of possible penalties if a future investigation were to find Google (GOOGL) is not complying with the DSA. Unlike some of those previous letters, however, Breton’s letter to Google does not directly suggest the company has spread misleading or illegal content.

But they now face a perfect storm of factors that could make it harder than ever to keep up with the next wave of election misinformation. Experts worry that the proliferation of generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, could make it easier for bad actors to create election misinformation. OpenAI, the maker of the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, issued a stark warning about the risk of AI-generated misinformation in a recent research paper. The platforms largely use a mix of human and automated review to identify misinformation and manipulated media.

The report found that the FBI and DHS continue to spend more on international terrorism, despite saying for years that domestic terrorism now poses a greater threat to Americans. The report said a change in how the FBI categorizes domestic terrorism ideologies has been a hindrance to understanding the problem. In 2017, FBI created a new category of domestic terrorism ideology called “Black Identity Extremists,” but then stopped using it. The report also criticized the FBI and DHS as having been conservative in hunting for threat intelligence posted publicly on social media. Research conducted by MIT’s Technology Review found that “users consistently migrate from milder to more extreme content” on YouTube.

Andrew Tate, a self-described "success coach" who has been criticized for what many see as misogynistic advice, has been banned from Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube. A spokesperson for TikTok said on Monday that following an investigation by the platform, an account belonging to Tate has been permanently banned. "Misogyny is a hateful ideology that is not tolerated on TikTok," the TikTok spokesperson said. YouTube also banned channels associated with Tate, including the channel TateSpeech, which had over 744,000 subscribers. If it's a channel dedicated to reposting content from a banned channel, YouTube may terminate that channel as well.
